This week I was up in the North Carolina mountains for work and visited a winery that's been on my list. North Carolina is home to more than 525 vineyards and 185 wineries set amid scenic landscapes from the mountains to the coast. Many of the best North Carolina wineries and vineyards are found within the Yadkin Valley region. There are more than a dozen wineries within an hour of Asheville.
Coming from Hendersonville, I headed to Point Lookout Winery. The drive is beautiful with dozens of Apple Orchards along the way. The wine was absolutely fantastic, reminding me of the wines I love so much from the Paso Robles California region, smooth as velvet, easy to drink, and wonderful to pair. I finished my tasting with the Javine. It's a desert wine, ruby red infused with coffee. I see myself enjoying this with a dense piece of chocolate cake. Naturally, I purchased a bottle and plan to share it with my foodie friends. I also purchased the 2016 Cliffield and the 2016 Pavilion which are lovely red blends.
The views are to die for overlooking acres and acres of grape vines, with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the backdrop.
This is a great reminder that you don’t have to board a plane and spend a fortune to get away. A day trip, an overnight trip, or a weekend trip with Asheville, Hendersonville, Lake Lure, and Chimney Rock, all close by.
I made a new friend too. Phyllis and I had a great time chatting and getting to know each other, as she poured my wine. She is super friendly, but then again, doesn’t wine make everyone happy?
