People often ask me what it's like to retire. My answer usually surprises them……
I didn't retire from something. I retired to something.
After more than two decades in corporate America, I walked away from a career I was incredibly proud of. It challenged me, shaped me, and introduced me to wonderful people. It taught me how to lead, solve problems, work hard, and never stop learning.
For that, I will always be grateful.
But somewhere along the way, another dream had quietly taken root. It wasn't a dream of slowing down. It wasn't a dream of sitting still. It was a dream of flour-covered countertops, creating new recipes, trips to Italy, the aroma of simmering tomato sauce, and tables filled with people who arrived as strangers and left as friends.
So when I retired, I didn't stop working.
I simply started doing the work my heart had been preparing me for all along. Since then, I've written cookbooks, teach pasta classes, appear on television lifestyle segments, travel through Italy searching for stories, contribute to an Italian American magazine, and Im building a community around something I believe with my whole heart:
Food is never just food.
It's tradition.
It's family.
It's culture.
It's love served on a plate.
Looking back, I realize my corporate career wasn't separate from this journey; it prepared me for it. Every meeting, every challenge, every lesson helped me build the confidence to create Lowcountry Bella.
Life has a funny way of connecting the dots when we least expect it. So if you're standing at the edge of retirement, or wondering if it's too late to chase a dream, let me tell you this:
It's not.
You are not defined by the career you're leaving behind. You are defined by the life you're courageous enough to create next.
Maybe your next chapter is painting.
Maybe it's gardening.
Maybe it's traveling.
Maybe it's writing the book you've carried in your heart for years.
Or maybe it's making homemade pasta with people who become friends before the sauce is even finished.
Whatever it is...
Don't think of retirement as the end of your story.
Think of it as finally having the time to write the chapter you've always wanted to read.
I didn't retire from something.
I retired to something.
And every day, I wake up grateful that I did.
